Week Three: Breakthrough

For a while I’ve been struggling with my female main character. I didn’t ‘get’ her. That sounds kind of nutty since I made her up, but in the past, I’ve had characters come to me fully formed or from a previous book, so it was easy. This time, I was making her up out of thin air and that’s an apt description of her as well, thin. I didn’t understand her motivations and I didn’t have a good grip on what she wanted. I think that’s why this book has been so hard to write.

But this week, it all changed. I realized I gave her the wrong job. Changing that one detail opened a flood of information, everything from wardrobe to personality. And there she stood, Charlotte Anne Barlowe. Fully formed.  I know her motivations, her fears, what she desperately wants from life and what’s holding her back. And the change makes her a much better fit with the male main character. They make sense now.

So that’s means I’ve written pages and pages, right? Um no. I wish. I have written some important details to nail the ideas down, but life has interrupted this week. I’ve had to feed the meter on both the day job and my home life a bit more. It’s always been a give and take. I’d love nothing more than to write for living, but I’m not there. It is what it is.

For this week coming up, I’m hoping to get at least 3k words in on the new start and we’ll see how it all goes. If nothing else, it feels so good to finally be on the right track.

Christa, I’m so excited to hear that you’re working on your next book! I absolutely loved the Sweet River Redemption series! I loved the characters, the engaging romance and especially the way you present Biblical truth. You are truly a gifted writer and one of my very favorite authors.
